Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce

If you have been following me for awhile, you already know that I have a slight obsession with barbecue sauce. I put it on just about everything, burgers, steaks, chicken strips, even pizza! No, not regular pizza, Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza silly. This year for Thanksgiving I wanted to change things up {because I don’t actually like turkey} so I created a Southwest Roasted Turkey….
smothered in this thick and delicious… slightly sweet, slightly spicy, Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce…and it was amazing!
I actually created this sauce 2 1/2 years ago and used it to make Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Ribs. I loved it so much that I used it again on my Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Chicken and Cherry Chipotle Glazed Salmon, but for some bizarre reason I never gave this glorious sauce a post of it’s own…until now. 😉
A couple of important tips:
- You need to use cherry concentrate, not cherry juice. You can find it in the health food section at your local grocery store
- For added heat, puree a chipotle pepper with the adobo sauce and add it to the barbecue sauce
How to make Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce:
Place all sauce ingredients into a medium sauce pan and stir to combine…..
Creating this sauce is easier than getting an image that is in focus. 😉 Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally…..
The sauce will be reduced by about half of it original volume. It will still appear on the thin side, but thickens up nicely as it cools.
Allow to cool, and pour into a clean container and store in the refrigerator.
I just had another brilliant idea of how to use this sauce in the very near future! Let’s just say that it involves shrimp and bacon….. 😉

Cherry Chipotle Barbecue Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-natural ketchup
- 1 ½ cups brown sugar
- 1 cup cherry concentrate not juice
- ½ cup water
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 Tablespoon onion powder
- 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 Tablespoons adobo sauce
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
Instructions
- Place all sauce ingredients into a medium sauce pan.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Allow to cool, and pour into a clean container and store in the refrigerator.
Notes
- I used the adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers. If you would like more heat, puree the peppers and add them to the sauce.
- Serving size equals 2 Tablespoons. This recipe makes approximately 2 1/2 cups of sauce/ 20 ounces.
